This is the correct way to repair damaged plaster walls
Once you have the tools and materials ready, it is time to begin the repair. If it is a very large hole, you will need to patch it with drywall.

To do this you must do the following:

Start by measuring the thickness of the drywall, which will most likely be ½ inch.
Next cut the plaster patch to size and fix it in place with screws. Make sure to space the screws every 6 inches.
After this, you should tape the edges of the drywall so that they are invisible. This is actually the most complicated part of repairing a drywall.
If you have a lot of repairs to do, it is recommended that you purchase a 20-minute setting compound. This type of compound hardens quickly and does not shrink.

Therefore, it is ideal for filling holes in plaster walls before joint tape is applied. You should also make sure to apply a layer of compound and tape to each joint.

You will need to dilute some joint compound in water to help set the tape. The second and third coat is to blend and smooth the joints with masking tape, so that they are invisible when painted.

Of course, after each coat is dry, place a straightedge against the drywall to catch any obvious skips or dings. If necessary, apply more coats, then sand and proceed to paint.

Important Tips When Repairing Plaster Walls
When repairing damaged drywall, it is important to look for obstructions. That is, you will often come across cables, pipes or conduits. If so, carefully work around them using a drywall saw.

You can also make a shallow cut by repeatedly scoring the line with a sharp knife. After this proceed to cut out the damaged section with a drywall saw.

These tips will help you have better results:

Cut backer boards 4 inches longer than the height of the hole in the wall.
Attach these boards to the back of the drywall using screws. Do this carefully so that the screw tips don’t prick your fingers.
Then apply a thick layer of drywall compound over the joints. then press the tape into the compound with a flexible blade.
Without wasting any time, apply a thin layer of compound over the top of the tape. Let it dry.
The second coat of joint compound should be applied at least 6 inches beyond the edge of the first coat. This is to narrow the edges of the repair.
Let the compound dry and then proceed to apply the third coat, which is to smooth out the remaining uneven areas.
Finally you should sand the dry compound using 100 grit sandpaper to eliminate edges and make the surface flatter.
What if I have a cracked corner?
You may also need to repair plaster walls with cracked corners. However, you should do this as soon as you spot the crack, as it will often extend from the floor to the ceiling.

The key to repairing a cracked corner wall is to remove all loose tape and drywall compound. If the drywall has crumbled, cut it with a knife and fill the gap with setting compound.

After this replace the gasket and cut the tape at the ends of the cracked area, scrape and spread all the loose tape and compound.
Next, apply a 1/8-inch layer of compound to the joints. then press the tape on them.
Apply the second and third coat to smooth the joint and allow the compound to dry on one side before applying the other.
Finally sand gently
